Water Quality Monitoring

Water is second essential commodity after air for the survival of living beings including mankind on earth. Water management involves various human activities like irrigation, agricultural / industrial development, use of water resources for hydroelectric generation etc. For management of water quality of a water body one has to define the water quality requirements or water quality objectives for that water body.

Increase of urbanisation and industrialisation is one of the important factors causing pollution of water resources. The water quality monitoring is a must for rational development and management of water resources. It has a direct relation with chemistry, biology, statistics and also economics. While implementing the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974,

Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), after bifurcation of the State, is continued to monitor water quality of rivers, lakes, canals, drains, ground water, coastal waters, etc. through out the State of Andhra Pradesh under the follwing various programmes / projects. APPCB is having three fully equipped Zonal Laboratories and nine Regional Offices to cater the needs of the water quality monitoring in the State of Andhra Pradesh.

National Water Monitoring Program

The Andhra Pradesh State Pollution contol Board works in Collaboration with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which runs a nationwide network of water quality monitoring comprising 124 (91 stations monthly basis + 33 stations half yearly basis) stations in the National Water Quality Monitoring Program (NWMP)

As part of the NWMP, the Board carries out monitoring on monthly basis in surface waters and on half yearly basis in case of ground water. The monitoring network covers Rivers, Lakes, Bay of Bengal, Tanks, Ponds, Wetlands and Canals etc present in the State of Andhra pradesh.

Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System

Andhra Pradesh on its eastern side has about 975 Kms of sea-coast of Bay of Bengal covering 9 districts and is put to use for different activities. Major rivers like, Godavari, Krishna, Pennar, Vamsadhara & Nagavali are joining the coast of Bay of Bengal. Discharges like sewage from various towns & cities, Agriculture run-off, Industrial effluents, etc. are the potential threats to the water quality of coastal waters of Bay of Bengal. In view of this, Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board is monitoring coastal waters of Bay of Bengal regularly on monthly basis at the following points under Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System (COMAPS): Annual average values of coastal monitoring results for the period of 11 years from 2010-11 to 2020-21 are as follows:

Water quality Status of Kolleru Lake

Kolleru Lake is a natural wetland situated between Krishna and Godavari deltas in the costal districts of West Godavari and Krishna , lying between the latitude 16.32" and 16.47" and longitude 81.05" and 81.21"E. The important activites in the lake area are agriculture and aquaculture. The Lake is the drinking water source for the people living in the vicinity of the Kolleru Lake and it is a bird sanctuary for indigenous and migrating birds.

The ecological degradation of the lake was set-in due to extensive use of pesticides by farmers of Upper catchment and delta regions , bunding for pisciculture, drainig of sewage and industrial pollutants through in-flowing drains and channels.

APPCB is monitoring the water quality of the lake at 20 locations , viz, 11 inlets points, 8 lake points and 1 outlet on monthly basis. Samples are analyzed for Physico-chemical and Bacterilogical Parameters
