Hazardous Waste Management

The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India(GoI) has notified Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008 on 24.09.2008 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

As per these rules, 36 categories of processes (Schedule – I) have been identified as hazardous waste generation processes. The occupier generating hazardous waste shall obtain authorization under Rule 5 (4) for generation, handling, collection, reception, treatment, transport, storage, recycling, reprocessing, recovery, reuse, and disposal of Hazardous Wastes as applicable. These rules are notified to ensure safe handling, generation, processing, treatment, package storage, transportation, reprocessing, collection, conversion and offering for sale, destruction and disposal, of Hazardous Waste. If these wastes are not properly handled, will cause air, water and soil pollution.
